Announcing Djarum Foundation Delegation Call For Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference (Amunc) 2018

Australia, also known as “the land Down Under” and ranked the 6^th largest country worldwide, has a rich ancient history.  Its aboriginal people, who have the oldest continuous culture on Earth, are believed to have arrived on the continent by boat from Africa at least 50,000 years ago. By the time of European settlement, up to one million aboriginal people were living across the continent as hunters and gatherers. With the entry of British colonization in the 18^th century, followed by migrations from foreign soldiers, officers and emancipated convicts, Australia saw the births of cities like Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide. During the 19^th century, these cities continued to grow as the gold fever lured thousands of hopefuls from other states and countries, bringing increasing wealth, diversity as well as rebellions against colonial powers. Many historians regard this as the beginning of an Australian democracy later marked by formal independence on 1 January 1901.

When World War II ended in 1945, hundreds of thousands of migrants from across Europe and the Middle East arrived in Australia, many finding jobs in the booming manufacturing sector. Australia’s economy flourished throughout the 1950s with major nation-building projects such as the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme and the Sydney Opera House.

Today, Sydney is Australia’s largest urban center, while Canberra serves as the political capital. Globally, Australia is ranked the 13^th largest economy and is almost equal to the USA in geographical area. It is  one of the most highly developed countries in the world, occupying a 2^nd place rank in the global Human Development Index with its quality health and education systems, robust economy and cultural arts, high level of freedom, and attraction as a major tourist destination.

Djarum Foundation believes that education, healthy competition, and international perspective are three essential cornerstones to prepare our country’s next generation of young leaders. Following the 2013 pioneering delegation to Boston’s Harvard MUN 2013, this year, through our annual International Exposure program for Beswan Djarum 2016/2017, we invite our brightest awardees to bring their leadership skills to the next level and represent our beloved country Indonesia in the Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference (AMUNC) 2018.

AMUNC is one of the greatest MUN in Asia Pacific.It was established in 1995 as the Australian Model United Nations and has been hosted alternately by universities in Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane and Queensland.Today, AMUNC provides a life-changing platform for exploring international perspectives and cultures and collaboratively tackling urgent world issues.

The 24^th AMUNC is headed home to Sydney for the first time in many years and will be hosted by The University of New South Wales through the support of their United Nations Society (UNSOC).To be held in Sydney, Australia from 8^th to 13^th of July 2018, the 24^th AMUNC will provide participants with the opportunity to meet MUN-enthusiastic peers from across the Asia-Pacific region, not only in the pursuit of gaining understanding toward international problems and solutions, but also to facilitate global networking. 

A delegation of 10 (ten) of the most proactive, courageous and bright Beswan Djarum Awardees will be selected to represent Djarum Foundation in AMUNC. As our official delegates, you will be trained to excel in various aspects, such as international issues, negotiation, research and other key skills. Moreover, we will cover all expenses related to the program starting with the training process (including all travel documents, accommodation, transportation, and travel insurance). The delegation will be staying in Sydney, Australia for no longer than 1 (one) week.

All activities will be conducted in English; therefore, we are looking for individuals who are highly fluent and competent in English (written and spoken, both active and passive) and firmly motivated to compete and represent Djarum Foundation in AMUNC 2018.

If you believe that you are up for this challenge, please submit your TOEFL-ITP report with a minimum score of 550 (scores of any English test conducted by your university, or other certainprominent educational institutions will also be accepted) along with a short essay no later than March 26, 2018. The essay should be no fewer than 1,000 words, properly written in English, and answer the following questions:

•          What do you know about Model United Nations?

•          What motivates you to take part in the Asia-Pacific Model United Nations Conference (AMUNC) 2018?

•          Why should Djarum Foundation choose you to be a delegate?

•          What and how will you contribute to the Djarum Foundation delegation if chosen?

•          How you would further translate the overall AMUNC 2018 experience to your future?

We encourage any Beswan Djarum 2016/2017 with high achievement and dedication to apply. It is our sincere hope that the 2018 delegation would continue our MUN award winnings such as Best Position Paper at LIMUN 2014, Best Social Venture Award at HMUN 2015, Honorable Mention at EuroMUN 2016 and also 2 Best Delegation awards at the Rome MUN 2017.

Please also be noted that upon selected, all appointed delegation members are required to take intensive training in Jakarta.
